Together, Fastmail and Bitwarden created a new Masked Email integration, designed to combine Bitwarden’s open-source password manager with Fastmail’s open API.

Today, we are proud to announce our newest Masked Email partnership with Bitwarden, the open-source password manager trusted by millions of users and businesses worldwide. This partnership is designed to integrate the open-source Bitwarden platform with our open API.

Masked Email lets Fastmail customers create a unique email address for every company they do business with, putting control of their online identity back in customers’ hands. This is the second Masked Email integration of its kind. We initially released Masked Email with 1Password in 2021.

A partnership that just makes sense

We have enjoyed working on this project with the team at Bitwarden. Due to Bitwarden and Fastmail’s open-source platforms and commitments to open standards, we were able to implement this partnership in record time.

“Bitwarden is a fantastic password management platform, and their open-source model integrates seamlessly with our systems,” said Fastmail COO, Helen Horstmann-Allen. “Partnerships between platforms like Fastmail and Bitwarden will only become more common as the world’s technology continues to become more integrated. Our expanded platform toolset creates exciting opportunities for developers and partners to give their customers access to Fastmail’s privacy-first tools right in their product.”

“Bitwarden is committed to empowering people to access, store and share sensitive data easily and securely,” said Kyle Spearrin, Bitwarden CTO. “Integrating Fastmail for Masked Email addresses into the Bitwarden username generator gives our customers another layer of privacy and anonymity to their online accounts.”

Masked Email protects your online identity

With people increasingly going online, data privacy is more important than ever.

Globally, people use email for personal and professional communications. Over the last decade, the way we use email has changed. Email has become intertwined with your online identity, and must be protected.

Our Masked email partnership with Bitwarden gives Fastmail customers the ability to generate Masked Email Addresses through a browser extension, track companies’ use (or reuse) of their email addresses, and take control of how their incoming email is filtered or blocked. Additionally, this partnership gives our customers the ability to choose the workflow that meets their needs best.

“Partnerships allow us to put this important security and privacy enhancement where our customers need it most,” said Fastmail COO, Helen Horstmann-Allen. “Whether you use 1Password, Bitwarden, or create addresses right from Fastmail, we want using a Masked Email address to be as convenient as using your main address.”

How it works

If you have a Bitwarden account, you can create Masked Email addresses easily with Bitwarden’s Generator.

You will need to connect your Fastmail account to Bitwarden by creating an API token in Fastmail. Once this has been done, you can begin generating Masked Email addresses in Bitwarden. The Masked Email addresses will automatically be saved in your Fastmail account. For more detailed steps on connecting your account, check out our help page.
